General Information & History

The Albany-Dougherty Historic Preservation Ordinance was passed in 1996 by the authority of the Georgia Historic Preservation Act.  The ordinance established a uniform procedure to protect and enhance, places, districts, sites,  buildings, cemeteries, structures, landscape features and works of art having a special historical, cultural or aesthetic interest or value.  The Historic Preservation Commission, (HPC) an eight member body, serves as the administrative authority for the ordinance.  Members are appointed by the City and County.  The ordinance designates a Historic District.   For additional information or a map, contact Planning & Development Services at 240 Pine Avenue, Suite 300, 229-438-3900.
